ghostly encounters

With Halloween right around the corner and the upcoming release of my erotic, ghostly romance, Cicada, I thought it would be a good time to write about ghostly encounters.

It's one thing to read about ghosts but quite another to come face to face with a real, live (er...dead) spook. I recently attended a lecture about ghost hunting. It was fascinating to learn all about the techniques and equipment and even hear some recorded clips. For example, when a ghost hunter first enters a supposedly haunted site, he/she checks the area for electromagnetic frequencies. Then he/she asks the ghost a direct question like "why are you here?" or "what do you want?"

So have you ever had a ghostly encounter? Share your experiences.

Yes, I have had a few unexplained encounters, but the one that shook me up happened last summer. I was hiking in the same woods where I've been a zillion times. It was a beautiful summer day.

As we approached a crossroads in the trail, my dog stopped and alerted. No big deal. She does that all the time, so my husband and I stopped to let her sniff and explore. Everything grew silent. Then this really horrible feeling came over me, wrapping itself around me like a shroud. I've never experienced anything like it before or since. The hairs literally went up on the back of my neck. It was like a scene from a horror movie when everything is shown in reverse video.

Everything looked normal, though, until I saw some sort of pale-blue lighted orb about 1-2 feet above the ground at the crossroads. Then it went out like a light being turned off. I didn't investigate. Wimp that I am, I turned tail and ran out of the woods, dragging everyone with me. For days I couldn't even look at woods without feeling scared out of my wits.

Maybe it was a lightning ball. I just know it was SOMETHING.

I was driving on a deserted highway and an old gray car - no paint on it - suddenly pulled in behind me from nowhere. It followed for less than miles then disappeared as fast as it came. It did not overtake me and there was nowhere to pull off the road. That particular strecth of highway had been the scene of a very bad car accident where people died in flames...very eerie

Sleeping over at my sister's house once, I woke with the distinct feeling that someone was standing over me, glaring at me. I felt that it was a woman and I just knew that I’d see her if I opened my eyes. But I was terrified and couldn't open my eyes. I wanted to call out to my husband who slept nearby with the kids on a mattress on the floor. But my throat locked up as an unpleasant chill gripped me. Anger flowed from the unseen entity. Finally, I was able to shout out my husband’s name. Instantly, the sensation vanished. I opened my eyes and saw. . .no one. Believe me when I say that I had trouble sleeping for the rest of the night.

When I asked my sister the next morning if she’d ever experienced any supernatural events in her house, she looked at me with guilty surprise before admitting that the house was indeed haunted. The husband and wife who’d lived there had both died in the house. My sister and her husband occasionally saw the spirits of both, leaning over their beds at night. She said that the woman especially seemed angry and would glare at my sister or her husband as if she didn’t want them in her house.

That's the scariest story, Afton! OMG...I can't IMAGINE!!! The most recent thing was visiting my son (who is in college). He lives in a nice little house with two other guys. My daughter and I went to visit him for a couple of days and his buddies were gone so we stayed there in his house. That first night my daughter headed to one of the guys' room to talk someone on the phone and was still talking when we turned in for the night.

The next morning she was very quiet. She said...Mom, the funniest thing happened last night." Now she isn't given to hysterics and she's not a drama queen. Very quiet and reserved person. She said...while I was on the phone I heard a girl laughing. She went on to say that she'd rolled over in bed, bumped her elbow on the wall and she heard the laughter again! My son came in the room and we told him about it. His eyes got really big, his mouth fell open. He went on to tell us that the roommate who used that room said the room was haunted and he always heard the laughter of a young girl. He said they'd just laughed it off, not believing and thinking he was imagining things.

Soooo weird!
